Concept Maps

Here are some concept maps that I made about the three different rock types. I used Bubbl and Xmind software. The two different software were very similar. It was very east to navigate through the maps. All you need to know is that enter makes a new topic, and tab makes a new subtopic. These are both free programs and they are very helpful to have.

Podcast

Today in class we learned about podcasts. It's pretty much a way for people to create radios on the internet. In my reading instruction class I am doing a big literacy assignment on a book titled The Higher Power of Lucky. I found a podcast on the Childrens Book Radio website that reviewed this book ( podcast #11). Overall it was good, it gave a nice summary of the book. However, I didn't like that it gave additional information at the beginning. I thought it was a little silly that the book review didn't even start until about 3 minutes into the podcast. The podcast was a little too long as well. I don't think the summary needed to be that long. For my first experience with a podcast I would have to say it was just alright. Maybe I was expecting too much, but I will continue to find podcasts that are informational and and exciting.

A New "No Child Left Behind"

I have always wanted to know more about "No Child Left Behind". Our new President Barack Obama plans to make big changes to the educational law passed in 2002. The main idea of the law is to improve test scores, and help every student read and do math at grade level. The new plans Obama has are to judge schools by their yearly growth. The schools and especially the teachers will either be rewarded for progress, or will receive interventions for lack growth. One of the major drawbacks for this plan, is that the additional time spent on math and reading may take away from art, music and PE. I think that overall the "No Child Left Behind" is a good idea. I always worry about those students that are falling behind, but don't get the help they need because the school doesn't have the proper resources. I hope that this educational law can make some positive changes for the schools in our nation.
